How We Plant Bagras

THE BAGRAS LINE PLANTING SYSTEM (East-West Axis)

The Line Planting method developed by EarthSphere is a unique system of line planting in sustainable forestry. It combines forest timber and agricultural cover crops, enhancing site compatibility for an optimized growth rate.

" Trees are planted in lines with a spacing arrangement of 10m x 1m, facing East-West direction to maximize sunlight exposure for the intercrops in the alleys. Extensive studies conducted in major industrialized forest tree plantations in the country concluded that trees planted in lines with 10m x 1m spacing arrangements yield 3 to 4 times more timber (cubic meters per hectare) than the traditional arrangements of 2m x 3m, 3m x 3m, 4m x 4m, and 2.5m x 2.5m.

" Cover crops are planted in the alleys between the rows of trees. The presence of trees improves the quality of soil, while proper fertilization, weed and pest control, programmed for the crops likewise benefit the trees. This improves survival rate, minimizes maintenance costs, and maximizes growth rate. The cover crops serve as a source of income for the local dwellers.

" Commercial thinning is done periodically to maximize nutrient intake of the best trees in the area. Forty per cent (40%) of the trees planted are harvested on the 3rd year. Another forty per cent (40%) is harvested on the 7th year, leaving the best twenty per cent (20%) to fully grow up to the 12th year.

" Sustainable forestry is attained through this system as income from the harvest of trees and agricultural cover crops becomes available for further development of the area and for the establishment of new plantation sites.
