BRIEF
HISTORY
Philippine
culture is shaped by diverse regional and outside
influences throughout its history. Early Filipinos
bartered with Chinese, Arabian and Malay traders,
some of whom settled on Philippine shores and
intermarried with the local inhabitants.
Ancient
culture was predominantly Malay in origin, but
three centuries of Spanish rule left its indelible
mark on the country and its people. Spice seeking
Spaniards first landed in these islands on March
16, 1521.They colonized and ruled the country
for 327 years, converting the inhabitants to the
Roman Catholic faith.
The
Philippine revolution of 1896 claimed the lives
of thousands of Filipino martyrs who shed their
blood in the struggle for freedom; how ever, this
did not win independence. But Spain's defeat in
the Spanish-American War of 1898 put the Country
into the hands of Americans. World War II lead
to the Japanese occupation, which lasted from
1942 up to 1945, when allied troops regained control
of the Islands.
The
Philippine Commonwealth was reestablished, leading
to the granting of Independence on July 4,
1946.
